Rehabilitation of the Alepin diversion and dumping structures

Client : City of Montreal – Wastewater Treatment Department

The Alepin structure was built in the 1980’s of reinforced concrete and has depths as low as 33m under the “Parc des Rapides”, south of the LaSalle boulevard. Its main purpose is to guide waste and rainwater from the collecting system to the south interceptor.

The structure’s underground roof needed a full rehabilitation of its original reinforced concrete slabs to prevent it from collapsing thus causing a wastewater overflow. Moreover, the interior surfaces needed a full restoration due to the severe damage caused by gases from the sewage emanation. The tops of the walls and the beam support areas all needed a full reconstruction as well. New precast beams were installed followed by new concrete roof slabs.

Some difficulties encountered during this project were, among others: traffic diversion, water pumping and diversion, difficult access to the structure and confined space work in a location with continuous water flow. Groupe Lefebvre is delighted to have acted as a general contractor and to have achieved the desired results with the city of Montréal.

SAMUEL-DE-CHAMPLAIN BRIDGE

Since 1962, the Champlain Bridge has been the direct link between Montréal and Brossard—it experienced 53 years of continuous traffic, approximately 50 million vehicles per year and numerous freezing and thawing cycles.

Undeniably, Samuel-de-Champlain Bridge needed an upgrade. Our main job was to ensure proper waterproofing of the concrete slabs on the bridge deck. This was a critical process as it guaranteed protection of the deck’s steel reinforcement and prevented its early onset deterioration.

We used a flexible membrane that covered all cracks and fissures which prevents water and de-icing salt from penetrating the concrete and creating corrosion on the reinforcing steel. One of the biggest challenges was the inclement weather. The early arrival of snow in november and the intense rains that occurred in May and June disrupted the application of waterproofing products.

Groupe Lefebvre and Soprema therefore suggested another technology that was better suited to the site’s weather: PMMA based products. These products offer incomparable sealing performance and durability. Our participation to this beautiful symbolic project of Montreal gives us great pride.

Pierre-Laporte bridge

Year : 2021

The Pierre-Laporte Bridge connects the City of Québec and Lévis over the St-Lawrence River on a stretch of 1041 km, making it the longest suspension bridge in Canada.

Counting 6 traffic lanes, the bridge counts approximately 125,000 vehicles daily, 9% of which are heavy vehicles. Stellaire Construction called on Groupe Lefebvre’s waterproofing expertise for this fast-paced project. Our work guarantees a more extended lifespan for the bridge deck and standardizes the surface quality.

The greatest challenge during this project was the race against time. The Pierre-Laporte bridge is an essential route which means we had very little time. Therefore, we mobilized a team of approximately 100 employees to meet our clients’ expectations.

Rosemont reservoir

Year : 2019-2020

Groupe Lefebvre successfully waterproofed the pumping wells in the Rosemont Reservoir, the largest drinking water tank in Montréal. This project faced many challenges — The access to the reservoir and its environment made the task difficult for our team of experts.

However, thanks to our experience and expertise, we overcame these challenges and efficiently completed this crucial endeavour. The Rosemont Reservoir has a water capacity of up to 227 000 m3, the equivalent of 61 Olympic-size swimming pools. Its surface is equivalent to 35 642 m2, or 5 soccer fields.

Its commissioning increased Montréal’s drinking water supply by 40%. We are proud of our contribution to this important venture, giving Montrealers access to drinking water for many years to come.

The Rosemont Reservoir is not only a remarkable engineering project, but it also represents an example of how companies and their communities can work together to create positive changes.

Bordeaux Prison — Rehabilitation of the perimeter walls

Client : Construction Jessiko Inc.
Owner : Quebec Infrastructure Corporation

In 2015, we worked on the repair of the concrete inside and outside the perimeter walls of the Bordeaux prison, approximately 30,000 square feet in area. We started with the hydro-demolition of the deteriorated concrete of the time; this method allowed an ideal surface preparation for the adhesion of the shotcrete and a significant reduction in the risk of micro-cracks.

Our ACI certified lancers and team of cement workers used a total of 770 1000kg bags on this project. One of the biggest challenges during the contract was managing high-level security throughout the facility.

The effective working range was short and we had to completely mobilize and demobilize every day. We are happy to have undertaken this beautiful project and to have been recognized by the American Shotcrete Association (ASA) in 2016.

Nouveau pont Champlain

Imperméabilisation de la dalle de béton sous le terrain de pratique de soccer/football individuel à la Régie des Installations Olympique.
Le terrain de pratique de soccer et football se situe sur le toit du stationnement PB-2 au Stade Olympique et compte une surface de jeu de plus de 20 000 m2. Le groupe Lefebvre a remporté l’appel d’offres pour l’enlèvement de terre, l’enlèvement de la membrane existante, la correction de pente, l’ajout de drainage (drains), la réparation de béton, la pose d’un système d’étanchéité et les autres travaux connexes.

Portée des travaux à l’extérieur :
○ Excavation de 1 mètre de terre sur 20 000 m²
○ Enlèvement de la membrane existante sur 20 000 m²
○ Réparation de béton et ajout de bordure de béton au niveau des joints d’expansion
○ Correction de pente et ajout de drainage (inclus travaux structure, électricité et mécanique)
○ Installation d’un nouveau système d’étanchéité de Soprema sur 20 000 m²
○ Installation d’un panneau de drainage Miradrain 6000 sur 20 000 m²
○ Remblais de pierre net sur 20 000 m²
